How a Golf Handicap Is Calculated (World Handicap System)
By the end of this page you will be able to compute your own Handicap Index from a list of 20 scores. That is the whole promise: the Index is a specific formula, not a mystery, and we work one example all the way through it, step by step.
What the Handicap Index actually is
Under the World Handicap System, the system used by the USGA and handicapping bodies worldwide, your Handicap Index is a single number, carried to one decimal, that measures your demonstrated playing ability. Demonstrated is the key word: the system builds it from your better recent scores, not all of them, which is why it usually sits below what you shoot on a normal day. More on that later, because it is the single most misunderstood thing about handicaps.
One important distinction before the math. The Handicap Index is the portable number that travels with you. It is not the number of strokes you get on the first tee. That comes from converting your Index for the course and tees you are playing that day, and it is a separate step, explained in our guide to Course Handicap vs Playing Handicap. The calculation has two stages: first, the system turns every round you post into a score differential; second, it computes your Index from your recent differentials.
Stage 1: Every round becomes a score differential
You cannot compare an 88 at a brutal course to an 88 at an easy one, so the system does not compare raw scores at all. It converts each round into a score differential, a number that says how well you played relative to the difficulty of the course and tees that day. Two course numbers make that possible, both printed on the scorecard:
- Course Rating: what a scratch golfer is expected to shoot from those tees. A 71.5 rating means scratch golf is roughly 71.5 there.
- Slope Rating: how much harder the course plays for a bogey golfer than a scratch golfer, from 55 to 155. The reference value for a course of standard difficulty is 113.
Score differential = (113 / Slope Rating) x (Adjusted Gross Score - Course Rating - PCC adjustment)
Two terms in there need unpacking.
Adjusted gross score: the net double bogey cap
Your adjusted gross score is your actual score with each hole capped at a maximum, so one disaster hole cannot wreck your handicap record. The cap on any hole is net double bogey: par, plus two strokes, plus any handicap strokes you receive on that hole. If you take a 9 on a par 4 where you get one handicap stroke, it goes into the calculation as a 7 (4 + 2 + 1). Your card still says 9, and your total for the round still counts every stroke; only the handicap math uses the capped version. New golfers without an established Index cap each hole at par plus 5 until they have a number.
PCC: the weather adjustment you can mostly ignore
PCC stands for playing conditions calculation. Each day, the system compares everyone's scores at a course against expectations, and if conditions were unusually hard or easy (gale-force wind, brutal setup), it applies a small adjustment to that day's differentials. On the vast majority of days the PCC is zero, so for everyday purposes you can read the formula as (113 / Slope) x (score - Course Rating).
One example, worked all the way through
Say you shoot 92 from tees with a Course Rating of 71.5 and a Slope Rating of 125, no holes capped, PCC zero.

Notice the differential (18.5) came out lower than your strokes over the rating (20.5). That is the Slope factor doing its job: 125 is harder than the standard 113, so the same score earns you more credit there. Shoot the same 92 on an easier course with a Slope of 105 and a rating of 69.0, and the differential would be (113 / 105) x (92 - 69.0) = 24.8. Same score, very different meaning. It also means the tees you choose change the ratings you are measured against, which is one more reason to pick them honestly. Stage 2: Your Index is the best 8 of your last 20
Once you have a scoring record, the Handicap Index calculation is short: take your most recent 20 score differentials, keep the lowest 8, average them, and round to one decimal. That is your Handicap Index. The maximum Index the system allows is 54.0.
The record rolls forward. Every new round you post pushes the oldest one out of the 20, and the system recomputes the best-8 average. Post a great round and it likely enters your best 8 immediately, so your Index drops. Post a bad one and usually nothing happens, because a bad differential was never going to make your best 8 anyway. Your Index only creeps up when good rounds age out of the window and there is nothing recent to replace them.
If you learned handicapping years ago, you may remember the average being multiplied by 0.96, the old "bonus for excellence." That multiplier belonged to the pre-2020 USGA formula. The current World Handicap System does not apply it in the standard Index calculation: it is a straight average of your best 8 of 20, rounded.
Fewer than 20 scores? There is a table for that
You do not need 20 rounds to get a handicap. Under the World Handicap System you can establish an Index after posting 54 holes, in any combination of 9- and 18-hole rounds, which is as few as three 18-hole scores. With a short record the system uses fewer differentials and, at the smallest record sizes, subtracts a safety margin so a thin sample does not produce an inflated number:

So with exactly three rounds posted, your Index is simply your single lowest differential minus 2.0. In the worked example above, if that 18.5 were your best of three rounds, your first Index would be 16.5.
The safeguards, in plain words
A few guardrails run quietly on top of the basic calculation. You do not need to compute any of them yourself, but they explain movements that otherwise look odd:
- The soft cap and hard cap. The system remembers your best Index over the past year, called your Low Handicap Index. If your Index starts rising well above that point, the soft cap slows further increases, and beyond that the hard cap stops them entirely. Your Index can always fall freely; the caps brake only rapid upward movement. The point is to stop a genuinely good golfer from drifting to a soft number through a run of careless rounds.
- Exceptional score reduction. Post a round dramatically better than your current Index and the system applies an extra downward adjustment to your record on top of the normal recalculation. One career round will legitimately move your number.
What a handicap is not
A Handicap Index is not your average score, and it never was. Because it averages only your best 8 differentials out of 20 and throws away the other 12, it describes what you shoot on your good days. On a typical day, expect to score several strokes above the number your handicap predicts. That is not the system being unfair, and it is not you underperforming; it is exactly what a best-8-of-20 average is designed to produce. Beating your handicap is supposed to feel like a good day, because it is one.
It is also not a rating of how good a person is at golf compared to their friends' averages, and it is not a target to protect. If what you actually care about is a scoring barrier, the plan in how to break 90 matters far more than any decimal on your record.
What about 9-hole rounds?
Nine-hole scores count. Under the current system, when you post a 9-hole score the system converts it into a full 18-hole score differential using your 9-hole result plus an expected score for the nine you did not play, based on your record. You no longer have to wait for a second 9-hole round to pair it with, which was how earlier versions handled it. The practical takeaway: post your 9-hole rounds, they feed your Index the same day.
